Constantius II was the last surviving son of Constantine the Great who at the death of his father became Augustus together with his brothers, Constantine II, and Constans on Sept. 9, 337. He promptly oversaw the the massacre of his father-in-law, an uncle, and several cousins. The brothers divided the empire with Constantius receiving Greece, Thrace, the Asian provinces and Egypt. While he warred with Persia, his brothers warred over the west leaving Constantine II dead and Constans as the sole ruler of the West. Constans was then overthrown by Magnentius. When Constantius defeated Magnentius, Constantius forced him to commit suicide leaving him as the sole ruler of the empire. Constantius then elevated his cousin, Constantius Gallus to Caesar to rule in the east, but then executed him 3 years later. As emperor Constantius promoted Arianism and persecuted Jews.
