I’m very excited to offer this incredible, restored circa 1912 pan style chandelier featuring a dazzling set of six matching wheel cut art glass shades!
This fixture, dating to 1912 (as evidenced by the patent stamp on the shade holders), is in fantastic vintage condition with a nicely aged patina that brass can only acquire through decades of oxidation. I have not polished the metal as to preserve the interesting color, but it did get a thorough cleaning. Certain components of this fixture were originally (and have again) been painted in a medium champagne gold finish. There are some minor surface irregularities both to the painted and unpainted components of this piece, but that is to be expected from any fixture from this era.
A fixture like this is special, as it is representative of a higher order of pan lights than what most modest working class families would have hung in their homes. Higher quality lights were more expensive than average, and harder still to come by today. Lights like these are often tossed in renovations and are not easy to come by in good condition anymore. This particular pan light, featuring dazzling, ornately cast arms and deeply embossed shade holders sets it apart from more commonly seen versions of fixtures of its kind. The heavy gauge chain and loops also indicate that this is a much higher than average quality light.
The size of the fixture itself also sets it apart from the norm, measuring an impressive 21” in diameter, scaling it for a medium or larger space.
The sockets are all original and have a good “snap” when pulled, while the wire and mounting hardware are all new, the wire being cloth covered like the original would have been. On the whole, the fixture is in very good vintage condition, the only flaws of note being some surface blemishes and minor wrinkles or ripples, and some patina inconsistencies, none of which can be seen from any normal viewing angle.
Of special note is the sixth, central bulb socket - how cool! Though it can be utilized for many different applications, I have sourced and am supplying the fixture with a VERY RARE pull chain socket/screw base adaptor and sixth matching glass shade. I also show it with a period correct frosted bare bulb (not included), and with no adaptor at all if desired. In the days of early electricity, this socket may have also been utilized with a thread adaptor to run a cloth cord to a lamp perched on a table positioned directly below the chandelier, as wall outlets were not yet commonplace in this era. An interesting and useful piece of history!
The frosted, wheel cut art glass shades, which feature a foliate/leaf and ray motif near their bottom rims, are absolutely lovely. They light very well and suit the fixture quite nicely. Their A-line form is visually interesting, and they really “make” the whole piece. Each of the SIX! matching shades has a roughly ground bottom rim that sports minor chips and flakes, which is fairly common for early 20th century mass produced glass. Save that, they are all in excellent condition and are free of noteworthy flaws.
The scale of this light makes it ideal for a medium sized room, at about 21 - inches across, measured from shade-to-shade, and about 36 - inches long. I am unable to adjust the length of this fixture without replacing the original heavy gauge chain, which I am loathe to do, but can if necessary. I picture it in a living room, a bedroom, over a stair hall landing/common space, or even in a larger closet. Pan lights were wildly popular in the early 20th century, and are very versatile light fixtures that work in just about any space.
The sale includes all the necessary mounting hardware, light bulbs are not included.
