Wow, this was love at first sight! Very pretty market basket. The weaver has woven a divider inside the basket. The basket is characteristic of baskets made in Western North Carolina, the Appalachian area, as far as materials and weaving styles. The basket materials are white oak, split oak around rim, oak splint handle and some grass or rush tucked in between the split oak rim. The basket form is twill plaiting at 1/1 interval, closed spacing. The base is the same. The splint oak handle is impressive. The weaver did a mortise and tenon where it attaches to the bottom. It is a compound rim, meaning there are three types of material forming the rim. The decorative contrasting color sets off the piece.

Signed: Dodd on base.
