The Aedui were a Celtic Tribe of central Gaul (later the French region of Burgundy). Julius Caesar began his conquests of that region in 58 BC. The Aedui had been allies of the Romans since 121BC and had been awarded the title of “Brothers). Under Augustus they became a “Allied Community” and moved to a new capital at Augustodunum which became a prosperous and cultivated city. In 48 BC the Aedui elite becoming increasingly Romanized became the first Gallic community to provide senators for Rome. The Celts were not “barbarians” and were not just great warriors, but highly skilled artisans, who were very civilized and had sophisticated politics, religion, and philosophy.
