Matthias Corvinus was king of Hungary between 1458-1490. He is credited with re-shaping Hungary which was threatened from abroad by the Ottomans and within by chaos and lack of leadership. He consolidated the monarchy by increasing the role of the lesser nobility, making the tax system fairer and codifying the laws. He appeared to govern as an enlightened ruler. This silver Denar has the depiction of the Madonna and child on the obverse.
