For your consideration, an antique circa 1870s-1900s, an early Limoges cameo featuring a two faced lady made in pate sur pate technique, mounted in brass with an early pre-trombone clasp.

Pâte-sur-pâte is a French term meaning "paste on paste". It is a method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired, unglazed body, usually with a coloured body, by applying successive layers of white porcelain slip with a brush. The usual colour scheme is a white relief on a contrasting coloured background.

Perhaps, the lady is two-faced like a deity Janus, the god of the transitions and beginnings in Roman mythology, usually depicted with two faces ( Janus two-faced), because they can look to the future and the past, or perhaps the lady in the cameo has two faces, a young and an old one, as she ages.

The cameo appears to be signed in a handwritten style with a maker's mark (unknown to me).

A rare estate find!
