Parasomnia is the upcoming sixteenth studio album by Dream Theater. The album was announced on October 10, 2024, following a week of cryptic teaser videos released on social media by the band. This album is Dream Theater's first with Mike Portnoy on drums since he initially left the band after the release of Black Clouds & Silver Linings in 2009. The album's first single, Night Terror, was released on October 10, 2024. The second single, A Broken Man, was released on December 3, 2024. The third single, Midnight Messiah, was released on January 22, 2025. The album is scheduled to be released on February 7, 2025.

According to Oxford Languages, the word "parasomnia" refers to "an undesirable physical or behavioural event that occurs during sleep or when waking up." This can include sleepwalking, sleep talking, crying, nightmares, bedwetting, sleep apnea, and nighttime seizures.

According to Mike Portnoy in an interview, this album is said to "[pick] up right where 'Black Clouds' left off."

The cover art could be seen as referencing that of Images and Words, as both covers feature a girl wearing a nightgown in a bedroom.

Blu-spec CD describes a Red Book Compact Disc manufactured by a proprietary process introduced by Sony Music Entertainment Japan in late 2008.Its name derives from the similar manufacturing process to that used to create Blu-ray Discs. Instead of a traditional infra-red laser, a blue laser is used for recording the pits on the CD master that is needed for disc replication. The blue laser creates more precise pits, which Sony claims reduces distortion in the optical read-out process.

On 28 September 2012, Sony Music Entertainment Japan announced "Blu-spec CD2" or BSCD2, a progression of the Blu-spec CD format which employs a more precise BD cutting machine, a master disc that is made from the same smooth material as silicon wafers for chip manufacture, and a different recording layer material for the master disc. Sony refers to this process as "Phase Transition Mastering".
A Blu-spec CD can be played on all CD players and does not require a blue laser to be read.The same holds true for Blu-spec CD2 discs.
