ANOTHER OF GRANDMOTHER'S TIMELESS TREASURES
SMOKEY THE BEAR STUFFED TOY
IDEAL TOY COMPANY, USA 1952
A WONDERFUL TIMELESS TREASURE
17" TALL
Here is a 1952 original large Smokey the Bear,
rubberfaced plush stuffed toy.
When one of Grandma's little boys was just 7 years old
Smokey was his best friend and traveled all the way
from Nebraska to California on the train to visit Disneyland.
Because he was a constant companion he had to be
stitched up at the crotch - see photo.
In 1945 Smokey Bear became the advertising
campaign symbol for preventing forest fires.
This is one of the first official Smokey Bear stuffed toys made, released by
Ideal Toy Company under an agreement with the US Department of Agriculture
in 1952. Ideal made Smokey Bear until 1963.
On August 9, 1944, the first poster of Smokey Bear was prepared.
In 1952, Smokey Bear had enough public recognition to attract commercial interest. An Act of Congress passed to take Smokey out of the public domain and place him under the control of the Secretary of Agriculture. The Act provided for the use of collected fees and royalties for forest fire prevention.
One of the first licensed items was a Smokey Bear stuffed toy.
