Tips: A regular hand hand drill doesn't have much control to prevent skidding and breaking through the wall.
- Use a pillar drill with a fixed vice which is securely bolted to the workbench which will provide more stability.
- Use a very sharp High Speed Steel drill bit (HSS) or better, a Carbide drill bit or best, a Titanium drill bit. (Usually just a regular HSS drill bit will be sufficient so long as it is sharp).
- Use cutting fluid to reduce friction. (3-in-1 oil will do fine).
- Wear eye protection.
- Very gently wind down the feed handle taking care to centre the bit on the key barrel end.
