Due to its very high colour yield and selective colour, the dye is primarily used for marking water in heating circuits to detect leaks, as well as for colouring household chemical products. After application, it gives a yellow-greenish colour. Due to its good solubility in water, it can be used to colour household products such as cleaning products, detergents, toilet blocks, etc.   The standard consumption of dye for colouring water in heating circuits is 10 - 20 g/m3 depending on the needs.

It is an organic chemical compound, a xanthene derivative which is a xanthene dye. In alkaline solutions, fluorescein shows a green-yellow fluorescence, visible even at dilutions as low as one to tens of millions. The sodium salt of fluorescein is called uranine or acid yellow.

How is the dye produced?

Fluorescein is obtained by heating phthalic anhydride with resorcinol in the presence of a catalyst e.g. (zinc chloride, ZnCl2):

A derivative of fluorescein in the form of a leuco-dye is used in forensic science, for the fluorescent detection of the presence of blood at a crime scene.

A chemical organic compound, xanthene derivative, synthetic dye, orange-red crystalline substance, insoluble in water; its water-soluble sodium salt, uranine, exhibits intense green fluorescence, visible even at a dilution of 1 : 40 million (during World War II, it was supplied to aircraft operating over the seas - it made it easier to find survivors).

And now I present to you 10 examples of applications of Fluorescein powder:

1.     Tests in medicine, e.g. to assess blood flow in the eye

2.     Fluorescent staining of tissue for histological examinations

3.     Testing of weld seams in plumbing systems

4.     As a dye in the production of UV paints and varnishes

5.     As a dye in the manufacture of UV printing inks

6.     For determining the flow rate of liquids in the chemical industry

7.     For leak detection in sewage systems

8.     As a tracer in metallurgical tests

9.     In biochemical research, e.g. pH determination in cells

10. In optics, e.g. for testing the quality of contact lenses
