Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018) created the "American Dream Print Portfolio" in 1997 after working on pieces of the American dream for over 30 years. Within these prints are bright bold colors and symbols which held various meanings for Indiana. Most prints have circles, stars, numbers or stenciled letters. This print was created after the 1963 painting with the same title. In an interview with the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, D.C. Indiana remarks that the colors and their arrangement reminded him of the swastika from a Nazi flag, the danger that he wishes to warn the viewer of.
