What is Soto?
Soto is one of the largest sects of Japanese Zen Buddhism, focusing on seated meditation (zazen) and mindful awareness in daily life. Founded by Zen Master Dogen in the 13th century, Soto Zen emphasizes βjust sittingβ as a way to enlightenment.
Soto Buddhist prayer beads are characterized by having 108 main beads arranged in a double loop. A distinctive metal ring called βHyaku-hachi Kan Kinβ (the 108-ring metal loop) is traditionally attached, symbolizing unity and continuity in practice.
