The way most is done is by immersion dyeing. This involves running the already woven fabric through a vat with the desired color of dye in it. This is by far the least expensive way. The problem with it is that it will fade if left in direct sunlight since the color is only on the surface. The other way is solution dyeing or yarn dyeing. This method dyes the yarn/thread before it is woven into a fabric. Thus the color runs all the way through the fabric instead of just being on the surface. This method is highly resistant to fading in the sunlight. This type of fabric is much more expensive, usually about 6 times more. The fabric I use is the less expensive one so if fading is an issue with you, you may want to consider ordering the grey color. That way even after fading, it will still be some shade of grey. I can get the fade proof fabric, such as Sunbrella, but will add an additional $175.00 to the cost of my boat covers and $75.00 to the cost of a mast/spar bag.
