Published in 1939 by Viking Press in New York. First edition, first printing as indicated by “First Published in April 1939” statement on copyright page with no other printings listed and Battle Hymn of the Republic endpapers. In original oatmeal cloth covered boards and a first state first edition jacket with the “first edition” slug on bottom of front flap and correct $2.75 price on top of front flap. Included is a custom-made felt-lined archival clamshell case to preserve this amazing treasure.

CONDITION: FINE/FINE

The book is in FINE vintage condition. Some spots of light soiling on the boards and edges and darkening of endpaper gutters (per usual).

The exceptional qualities:

1. Yellow top stain in excellent condition (scarce)

2. No writing, no stamps, no ex libris marks, no dog-eared pages.

3. Very few signs of handling.

4. Sharp corners, unrubbed spine tips (very scarce)

6. Very clean, colorful and unfaded cloth.

7. Clean and bright pages.

As any collector of modern classics from the 1920–1950s knows, the real value is in the dust jacket. This one is a gorgeous beauty!

The original unrestored first state dust jacket is in FINE condition. While FINE copies of the first printing

are scarce, FINE original dust jackets are RARE. Clipped panels via publisher (as are all copies). The least amount of rubbing and edge wear I’ve ever seen for this title (very lightly to folds). The colors are vivid. The jacket is clean, the art nearly pristine. Just a hairline nick to bottom of spine (barely visible from blindside).

3. No chips (exceptionally scarce)

4. The wraparound art is in amazing condition.
