Indo e Vindo features the talented keyboardist, composer, and arranger Edú Tancredi in his debut as a band leader. Combining many elements from his rich background -- classically trained, he grew up on the border of Uruguay and Brazil and both studied and now teaches jazz at the Berklee College of Music -- the album takes the traditional elements of Afro-Cuban and South American music and combines them with surprisingly modern jazz. Backed by the simpatico band Bandon 33, Tancredi manages to inject bits of random improvisation into what many people consider to be a somewhat tired genre. The musicianship is excellent throughout and the resulting songs are quite diverse, ranging from straight-ahead Latin funk to gentle, introspective flute-fronted tunes. Tancredi shows throughout his flair for arrangements and this album, overall, allows each of its many elements to shine.
