This is a 1970's painting of a Brazilian capoeira event. This Brazilian artist showcases the significance of Capoeira in Afro-Brazilian cultural history. Capoeira, characterized by its music and its acrobatic dance movements with little or no physical contact, has historical roots in African traditions. It is often associated with Afro-Brazilian tactics of self defense and resistance to colonial rule that may go back as early as the 17th century. Here, the 'capoeiristas' perform encircled by women dressed in traditional Afro-Brazilian attire and men providing the beat with the berimbau and other musical instruments. [The inclusion of 12 inch ruler on the back side is intended to provide a sense of proportion.] See seller's photos.
