The Sphinx Aug. 1908 issue, published by A.M. Wilson from Kansas City, Missouri, as the western organ of the Society of American Magicians.  Size is 8 7/8" x 11 5/8" in poor condition, with significant wear, signs of yellowing, folds, bent corners, creases, marks and tears.  This is a fantastic early glimpse into the world of professional magic.  W.E. Floyd is on the cover.  There's a fascinating editorial about Houdini and the suspension of his magazine The Conjurer's Monthly Magazine.  It said, "Its editor (Houdini) and his brother, Dr. Weiss, made the grievous mistake of supposing that a magazine devoted entirely to news items, biographical and historical articles more or less biased by the opinions of the writer and criticisms of performers whose work or personality did not happen to please the editor, would succeed. 

It went on to state, "Added to the above was the self-evident fact that the magazine was intended primarily as an advertisement for the owner and editor and that he was in open opposition to all the other magical papers instead of being a friendly contemporary."
