Before you get crazed over the price, please consider the background. These are extremely rare advertising posters; perhaps a true “one of a kind”. Here is the back story.
In the early 1990’s, I was working in London and traveling on the Tube. I noticed these advertising posters in the train cars above the passenger seats. The ad campaign consisted of a series of posters that required careful looking to interpret. I think the idea was that it gave riders something to look at while riding the trains; and you needed to look for at them for some time to “get it”; meaning "interpret" them. In the context of getting “eyeballs” on an ad for a long period of time, these were a huge success.
If you pronounce the words phonetically, you will eventually “get” what each poster is trying to say. Dutch beer. Dutch speaker. Spoofing the Dutch language. I seriously doubt that these would be produced today, because I suspect someone would find them offensive. I believe it was a very successful ad campaign that died as a result of some corporate decision making; but that is just my guess.
I thought the posters were pretty clever. So, taking a chance, I wrote to the ad agency back then and asked if it was possible to acquire copies. I guess they were pleased somebody actually asked, so they set me a full set of the actual posters used on the trains. I thought I might eventually put them up somewhere but never got around to it. And I am pretty certain that, at this point, I never will. They have been sitting in a closet for over 30 years.
So, I thought it might be of interest to a very serious collector of breweriana; seeing as how it is quite possible that, by now, no others exist. If they are up on a wall, they are certainly interesting conversation pieces.
They are printed on reasonably stiff and heavy cardboard. These are the original signs that they used in the train cars, so they are pretty strong. Four posters; each measuring 24 inches by 11 inches. For being over 30 years old, they are in extremely good condition. Some of the corners have very slight bends which can be seen in the pictures. And, yes, the glass on the pictured beer bottles is slightly out of focus; and I do not know why they printed them this way.
Shipping may seem high, but it will be a large, heavy, odd sized package; which tends to cost more. They will need to be custom packed, and I am not going to do that unless there is a serious buyer out there. I have taken a guess at the size and weight, but, if shipping turns out to cost substantially less, I will refund part of that cost.
Please note: No returns. I am not a store. Please be sure you want these before you buy them.
Lastly, have
fun with the interpretations. If you get
stuck on any of them and just can’t stand it anymore, message me, and I will
send the “translation”.
