The Story

Small Fruit, Mighty Heat

The white bird's eye chilli — known in South India, especially Kerala, as Kanthari (കാന്താഠി) — is a much-loved traditional pepper. Its tiny, slender fruit start a pale ivory-cream, stand proudly upright in clusters, and ripen to bright red, each one packing a surprising punch of clean, sharp heat.

What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in flavour and fire. The fresh white pods bring a crisp, aromatic spiciness to chutneys, curries, pickles, stir-fries and dipping sauces, and a single chilli is often enough to lift a whole dish.

Just as rewarding in the garden, the plant is compact, bushy and astonishingly productive, covering itself in fruit through the warm months. As pretty in a pot on the patio as it is useful in the kitchen, it earns its place many times over.

Tiny but mighty — the bird's eye chilli is many times hotter than a jalapeño, with a fast, clean, sharp heat. The scale above is illustrative, not linear. A little goes a long way.

Growing Guide

From Seed to Fiery Harvest

01

Start Warm

Sow seed 5–8 mm deep in moist seed-raising mix. Keep at a steady 25–30°C; germination takes around 10–21 days. A heat mat or warm windowsill speeds things along.

02

Prick Out

When seedlings have a couple of true leaves, move them gently into individual pots. Keep warm, brightly lit and evenly moist to raise strong, bushy young plants.

03

Harden & Plant Out

Once all frost has passed and nights are warm, harden off over a week, then plant out 30–40 cm apart in full sun and rich, free-draining soil — or into a generous pot.

04

Feed & Water

Feed every few weeks with a potassium-rich organic fertiliser to drive flowering and fruit. Keep watering consistent and stake the plant if it becomes heavily laden.

05

Pick Often

Harvest the small pods white for a fresh, sharp heat, or leave them to ripen red for a touch more depth. Picking regularly keeps the plant cropping prolifically. Wear gloves.

Healthy Plants

Pest & Problem Guide

Pest

Aphids

Soft clusters on tips and flower buds that can spread virus. Blast off with water, encourage ladybirds, or use a mild organic soap spray, checking leaf undersides.

Pest

Whitefly

Tiny white flies that lift in clouds when disturbed, weakening plants and leaving sticky residue. Use yellow sticky traps and organic sprays, and keep plants well spaced.

Pest

Fruit Fly

A serious pest in many Australian regions. Use approved traps and exclusion netting, and dispose of any stung fruit promptly to break the breeding cycle.

Disorder

Blossom-End Rot

A sunken dark patch at the base of the fruit, caused by uneven watering and calcium uptake. Keep soil moisture steady and mulch well — it is not a disease.

Disorder

Sunscald

Pale, papery patches on exposed fruit during heatwaves. Encourage healthy leaf cover and use light shade cloth during extreme heat to protect the crop.

Disease

Damping Off

Seedlings collapse at the base in cold, wet conditions. Sow into warm fresh mix, avoid overwatering, and give trays good airflow and gentle warmth to prevent it.

Handle With Care

Capsaicin Safety Notice

⚠ Hot Chilli — Please Read

Bird's eye chillies are small but very hot. The capsaicin oil can cause a painful burning sensation on skin, lips and eyes. Wear gloves when cutting fresh or dried fruit, avoid touching your face, and wash hands, knives and surfaces thoroughly afterwards.

Introduce to food in very small amounts and taste as you go — one little pod can carry a lot of heat. Keep ripe fruit, dried chillies and any home-made sauce well out of reach of children and pets.

This product is sold as seed for growing. Grow, harvest and consume the resulting chillies responsibly and at your own discretion.
