Author: FLEISCHER, Nat
Title: [Manuscript]: Hell Flames on the Border: When the Fighting Cook Brothers Rose [with] Molly, Queen of the Last Prairie Outlaws [also, with variant titles]
Description: Softcover. Five drafts of a manuscript by Fleischer of an account of western outlaws, housed in a manilla envelope with Fleischer's ink note: "Cook The Last of the Outlaws by N.F. Fiction story written by me in 1958 for a book I never attempted to go through with it. Based on facts. Names are on file in prison records U.S. Also factual story true on Western Bandits." Five drafts, as follows: 1. 50pp. Ribbon copy. Heavily corrected; 2. 42pp. Carbon copy. Heavily corrected; 3. 30pp. Carbon copy. Moderate to heavy corrections; 4. 50pp. Carbon copy. Only evident corrections are in type; and 5. 50pp. Carbon copy. Only evident corrections are in type.
Additionally there are several printed illustrations, both clipped from other sources, and in proof form, both separated from the manuscripts, and in at least one case, carefully interleaved with the manuscript. Also present are a few letters to Fleischer, one from the Library of Congress, and a couple of others from news services responding to Fleischer's queries about Bill Cook and whether there were other books about him. Short answer: no, but one book had a chapter on his exploits. While Cook was a known figure, investigation of the Molly of the title (Molly Seneca), an attractive gun-toting woman of mixed ancestry, returns little.
In any event several drafts of an apparently unpublished manuscript encompassing both fact and fiction and based on western outlaw sources by Fleischer, noted American boxing writer and founder of *The Ring* magazine.
