Author: RAYNER, Emma
Title: Handicapped Among the Free
Publication: New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1903
Description: Hardcover. First edition. Octavo. Publisher's dark green cloth, stamped in white and gilt. Contemporary owner's name front fly ("Dr. Eroh"), front hinge professionally and seamlessly strengthened, front fly, partially affixed to pastedown, probably from a binder's flaw, but still a nice and near fine copy. Sympathetic partially-dialect novel by a white woman, set among the freed slaves of the Black Belt in the South, and which was seen at the time to be a refutation to Thomas Dixon's *The Leopard's Spots.* The Art Nouveau decoration of cotton bolls on the front board is particularly nice. Uncommon title.
