[Photo Album]: Service Album Fort Sherman (American Servicemen in the Philippines and Canal Zone)

Title: [Photo Album]: Service Album Fort Sherman (American Servicemen in the Philippines and Canal Zone)
Publication: 1934

Description: Softcover. Oblong small quarto. Rawhide-tied hand painted limp suede wrappers. Album of 76 gelatin silver images. Various sizes. Album is near fine, images are mostly near fine or better, a few taped in with some offsetting or staining. Autographs pages precede the images and include several names, addresses, and comments, all dated in 1934. The first half of the images are of an American soldier stationed in the Philippines, and the images depict sailors and ships en route from the Panama Canal Zone (where Fort Sherman was located), with several images of visits to native villages and with several images of the indigenous people. The remaining half of the images follow the same soldier back to the Canal Zone, where he seems perhaps to have been a band member, and show images of soldiers in uniform, in baseball uniforms, hunting with shotguns, and one of an African-American sergeant in uniform fishing on a riverbank with a small child, and then ends with several homefront images: family, hunting, a crashed car, etc. A modest but engaging album in the period between the two World Wars.
