1855 Chromolithograph of Abert's Finch from the Pacific Railroad Survey.

- - -

DISCUSSION:

A chromolithograph of a Abert's Finch (Pipilo Abertii). The Pacific Railroad Surveys, published between 1855 and 1861, were the result of a massive effort to find the best route through the American west for a transcontinental railroad. The expeditions enlisted not only surveyors but also scientists, naturalists, geologists and artists, and the resulting reports, 12 in number, provided details not only on the topography of the land, but the scenery, animals, plants and inhabitants. The lithographs and chromolithographs provide a stunning and important record of the state of the American west before the Civil War.
