The Story

Three Names, One Beloved Herb

Coriander, cilantro, dhania — धनिया in Hindi and ধনে in Bengali — is one of the most widely loved herbs on Earth. From Indian and Bangladeshi kitchens to Mexican, Thai and Middle Eastern cooking, its bright, citrusy leaves and warm, fragrant seeds appear in dishes the world over.

It is also one of the most generous plants you can grow. The young, feathery leaves are the fresh herb known as cilantro or dhania pata, perfect scattered over curries, salsas, salads and chutneys. Left to flower and set seed, the same plant gives you round, golden coriander seed — the warm, nutty spice prized in curry blends, pickles and baking.

Quick to germinate and quick to harvest, coriander rewards even first-time gardeners. Sow a little and often through the cooler parts of the year and you will rarely be without this kitchen essential again.

When to Sow in Australia

Seasonal Growing Calendar

Coriander is a cool-season herb that runs to seed (bolts) quickly in hot weather. For a steady leaf supply, sow a small batch every few weeks through the cooler months and provide light afternoon shade in warm areas. Use your local climate zone below as a guide.

Growing Guide

From Seed to Fresh Harvest

01

Sow Direct

Coriander dislikes being transplanted, so sow seed 5–10 mm deep straight where it is to grow. Gently crushing the round husk first can speed things up. Seedlings appear in 7–14 days.

02

Keep Cool & Moist

Give it steady moisture and a spot with morning sun and light afternoon shade in warm areas. Thin to about 10–15 cm apart for full plants, or grow densely for cut-leaf harvests.

03

Sow in Succession

Because coriander bolts in heat, sow a small pinch of seed every 3–4 weeks. This staggered approach keeps a fresh supply of young, tender leaves coming for months.

04

Harvest the Leaves

Start picking from around 4–6 weeks. Take outer leaves first and harvest little and often while they are young — this is when the cilantro flavour is at its very best.

05

Let It Flower for Seed

Allow a few plants to flower (the blooms are loved by bees) and set seed. Once the round seeds turn brown and dry, harvest them as the coriander spice — or save to re-sow.

Healthy Plants

Pest & Problem Guide

Disorder

Bolting

Running to flower early is coriander's most common quirk, triggered by heat and stress. Sow in the cooler months, keep moisture even, and pick regularly to delay it.

Pest

Aphids

Soft clusters on stems and new growth that can spread virus. Hose them off, encourage ladybirds, or treat with a mild organic soap spray, checking leaf undersides.

Pest

Slugs & Snails

They love tender young seedlings, especially in damp weather. Protect emerging plants with barriers or organic pellets and clear hiding spots nearby.

Disease

Powdery Mildew

White powdery coating on leaves in humid or crowded conditions. Improve airflow with good spacing, water at the base, and remove affected leaves promptly.

Disease

Damping Off

Seedlings collapse at the base in cold, wet, airless conditions. Sow into fresh mix, avoid overwatering, and give seedlings good light and airflow.

Tip

Poor Germination

The round husk holds two seeds and a hard coat. Lightly crush it before sowing and keep the soil consistently moist (not wet) until seedlings emerge.

🍽 Leaf & Seed Tips

Add leaves last. The fresh, citrusy flavour of cilantro fades with heat, so stir it through dishes right at the end or scatter it over the top before serving.

Store it well. Keep cut leaves fresh standing in a glass of water in the fridge, or chop and freeze them in a little oil or water in ice-cube trays for later.

Toast the seed. Dry-toast whole coriander seed in a pan for a minute until fragrant, then grind — the aroma is far better than pre-ground. Save a few seeds to sow your next crop.
