The company was founded in Cabiate, Italy, in 1933. Its first products were carburettors for motor vehicles. Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Dell'Orto began to produce carburettors with aluminium bodies used in motorbike sport at the time. By the early 1960s Dell'Orto was supplying carburettors to Fiat factories , as well as to other Italian and foreign vehicle manufacturers .

In the early 1980s, under the leadership of Luigi DellOrto - grandson of Gaetano - the company's founder , the company introduced the first fuel injection system.
