The name hydrangea comes from two Greek words that mean "water vessel" because the seed capsules are thought to be shaped like one. 


History in Japan

Hydrangeas have been cultivated in Japan for centuries and are mentioned in poetry from as early as 710 A.D. In ancient Japan, emperors would give hydrangeas to their handmaidens as a thank you.

Victorians believed that hydrangeas were a symbol of boastfulness or vanity.
