The Indian motorcycle marque predates by two years the other American motorcycle legend Harley-Davidson, but the company went out of business in the mid-50's. Despite this, the brand name just won't die; since the 1950's there have been numerous attempts to continue the manufacture of motorcycles branded as Indians and there is a thriving restoration scene based around the original Indian motorcycles. Particular noteworthy among these are the opulent Indian Chief models with the distinctive curvaceous lines of the skirted fenders. This book charts the history of the Indian brand from its early origins to the late models and includes a chapter on the British-built Indians of the fifties.
