Hat Kui Lei or Pionted Chines Hat. In Mandarin it is called hat kui and It is a round, wide-brimmed hat with a pointed top. It is worn on the head to protect from the sun and rain. In the past, Chinese people in China used to wear it when doing calculations and traveling outside the home. When immigrating to Thailand, they still wore the Kui Lei hat as before, such as wearing it to row a boat to sell things, wear it for gardening, wear it when traveling outside the house.
The process of making Kui Lei, from preparing materials to weaving.
1. The first step is preparing the materials, which are bamboo leaves. You can use young or old bamboo leaves. But old leaves are more durable.
2. Cut bamboo from the clump into branches and cure it using other leaves as a cushion. Place the bamboo leaves on top and use the leaves to wrap. Find a heavy piece of wood and place it on top of it. Curing creates heat. Bamboo leaves will turn yellow and fall off the branches. They can be arranged and stored for use for years.
3. The frame of the Kui Lei hat is made of colored bamboo.
4. Use a thin knife to cut the bamboo into strips. Sharpen until you get long, thin lines. Can be stored for a long time and will not be eaten by moths. When you want to use it, moisten it with water to soften it. Easier to weave
5. Weaving Kui Lei uses “Bo” as a model for weaving the frame. By weaving it into a pattern like Ta Chalom. It forms the shape of a pointed hat with a round base.
6. Weave the outer cover in the same way but use larger bamboo strands.
7. Take the paper that has been soaked in water until it is wet and stack it until it is round.
8. Take the bamboo leaves soaked in water and place them on top of the paper again. Then place the outer cover over the bamboo leaves. Then use it to hammer the knitting into the edge neatly.
9. The top of the hat uses rattan to form the top of the hat.
10. Apply rubber oil or wood oil to the outside of the helmet for durability. Hang to dry completely.
