Crow Bride is closely related to Crow Mother and is used in children's initiation rites to the kiva ceremony. Crow Mother is the goddess of kachinas, brings the yucca to the ceremony, and does not speak; Crow Bride actually initiates the children and speaks to them in whispers.

Likely to be from one of the three Hopi mesas in the Early Traditional Era (1850 - 1910). Simple carving and minimal decoration, very light wood (either balsawood or cottonwood root), and non water-resistant natural paints made with mineral and vegetable pigments. The white is probably a mixture of kaolin clay and oil. These pigments will wash off so be careful NOT to get it wet.

Nice example of an early, traditional, kachina whose role in Hopi culture goes back well before the tourist trade when newer, more defined and complex dolls, designed for white consumers, entered the marketplace.
