Rhode, John (pseudonym of Street, Cecil John Charles) - In the Face of the Verdict (UK Title: In Face of the Verdict — Dodd, Mead & Company: New York, 1940 - First American Edition / First Printing - No statement of edition or mention of later printings present on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first American edition.
The book has a small stained area to the rear lower edge which extends slightly into the text block. The boards remain rather straight, the design on the front cover and spine are bright and legible, the binding is square and firm, and internally there is some grubbiness but no writing or other markings present. A rather solid example overall. The dust jacket has rubbing, light soiling, and general wear. There is also a thin tape strip to the edges that is likely left over from an old dust jacket protector. There is a very small chip at the crown of the spine but this jacket is otherwise remarkably complete and presents well in the new archival mylar. While most of John Rhode’s titles are scarce this is another of those which is outright rare and seldom surfaces in any condition. This mystery was originally published in the UK under the title In Face of the Verdict (a very slight variation). A title in Rhode’s beloved Dr Priestley detective series.
