___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mon Dvaravati Buddha - To appreciate the beauty of this piece is to understand the Mon people who produced it and the Mon Kingdom from which it came.
Title: Rare and Important Standing Hardstone Dvaravati Buddha, Mon Dvaravati Period. 7/8th C. Ancient Mon Kingdom, North-Central Thailand.
Overview: Because few stone sculptures survived from Southeast Asia before the 10th century, this standing figure of a Buddha is particularly important. The piece was discovered at the ancient city of Nakhon Pathom, a Mon Settlement in north central Thailand. The image is presented on a flat steel style base, measuring 22.0 inches (56.0cm) in height with the stand.
Image Details:x"> Sacred 'Mon Dvaravati' Sakyamuni Buddha, stylistically executed in traditional Mon style of the Dvaravati period, portrayed standing in a frontal position, having the arms, hands and feet broken. Both hand would have originally been raised in a symbolic gesture of Instruction or Teaching, the 'Vitarka' mudra, where the tip of the thumb is pressed slightly against the index finger. The stance is typical Mon Dvaravati, specifically the way in which the figure displays a fluidity of modeling with emphasis on soft flowing volumn, rather than linear development of form. The profile is slender, wearing a ‘Uttarasanga,’ a close-fitted diaphanous garment, covering the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and arm open, which includes an undergarment draped lower than the hem of the outer loin cloth. xx Buddha's contoured face is rendered with a serene contemplative expression, with open eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, wide full-rimmed lips, and elongated earlobes. The head is covered by large snail-shell hair curls, whorled, surmounted by a domed ushnisha, with ornamentation. The reverse skillfully reflects the un-interrupted emphasized Dvaravati A-sexual attribute.
XXX Hand-carved of Hardstone, the surface has a rich naturally aged dark black hue, heavily encrusted with soil, oxidation, and some corrosive color. This skillfully executed image is a superb example of the Mon Dvaravati artistry produced during the Dvaravati period. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of this divine iconic in human form with lively imagination and conviction.
