John Rodgers entered the Navy at 25. He was commissioner a Lieutenant in the frigate Constellation. He rose to command and in the Barbary wars played a part in treaty negotiations with Morocco, Tripoli, and Tunis. During the War of 1812 he helped defend Baltimore and Washington against the British. He was a senior officer in his last 17 year of service.
