Amazing Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Court Figures:

Title: Rare Chinese Terracotta Sancia Glaze Pottery Figures. Tang Dynasty 8/9th Century.

Overview: An extremely rare set of pottery figures consisting of a well modeled Chinese court lady and her attendant, portrayed standing in conversation. The courtlady is an elderly aristocratic woman, standing with one armed raised in gesture. She wears a complicated hairstyle of great volumn, and attired in an elegant enveloping high-waisted garment fashioned with a linen belt gathering at the midriff, and that flows gracefully down to her feet.

xxxx Her male attendant is a high ranking dignitary, bearing a lavish gift, cradled with both arms. He is outfitted in a loose tunic, fastened by a band about the waist, and he wears a fashionable hat.

xxxx Both figures have extremely detailed flesh-like facial features in the natural unglazed slip, rendered with puffed eyes open, and arched eyebrows finely delineated in black by supple brush strokes. Details of folds and gatherings of the fabric are simply incised. The surface of the paired figures are beautifully decorated in 'tri-color' Sancia glaze, consisting mainly of straw-glazed amber and leaf green colors.

Remarks: These glazed pottery figures are exquisite expressions of Tang Dynasty Art, in excellent condition, with no chips or repairs. Under 15X magnification, there are extremely fine crackle lines (termed crazing) in the glaze. The base of each piece is funneled as a trumpet, which is typical of the period.
