Title: Rare Ancient Greek Bas-Relief Metal Sculpture Wall Plaque, Signed and Framed. 20th C.
Horse and Chariot motif, artist signed – with old wood frame. Bas-reliefs of Charioteers were not only found on Greek architecture and art, but in its majority on well-preserved sarcophagi, funerary art pottery, and grave altars. In ancient Greece one of the most gripping and dangerous athletic events for both horse and men was the Chariot Races, a sport that dates back at least to 700 BC. Spectators gathered to watch as horse teams pulled drivers in two-wheel carts around a track with hairpin turns at each end.
Description: A masterfully created rendition of a Greek Charioteer riding on a biga and engaged in a race, probably the Panathenaic games. The two-dimensional scene shows a chariot drawn by a pair of horses traveling at speed to the left, driven by a charioteer, a young nobleman, as is shown by his soft side hair curls, dressed in the usual long sleeveless ‘Chiton’, with wavy pleats, and with the trail of the garment billowing in the wind.
xxxx The deep vertical pleats of the tunic emphasize the charioteer’s solid posture, secured by a belt which tightens the tunic high above the waist. The charioteer holds the reigns with the left hand controlling the two opposing horses, as the right hand holds a cylindrical object, the riding crop. xxxx The horses are modelled in muscular form with their ears pricked forward, suggesting the alertness of spirited animals excited by the activity around them. xxxx The background is mottled in subtle depiction of light and shadow areas, suggesting elevated dust by the tempo of the race, accented by a fitting French term – ‘Vert-de-Grece’ meaning Green of Greece, or the verdigris patina as applied.
