Archaic Chinese Jade Carved 'Mythological Beast' Sash Buckle.
Late Yuan to Ming Dynasty (1271-1368)

Description: A magnificent and imporant Yuan to Ming dynasty Chinese pierce carved Jade Sash Buckle, created in the motif of a Mythological Dragon. Articals of this type were traditionally used by Chinese Aristocrates as a dress accessory, worn to fasten and tighten loose clothing, and mainly to facilitate movements, especially in indoor activities. From ancient Chinese mythology, these ornate objects formed an important motif within various Chinese myths and legends, serving as an allusion in poetry and Chinese literature. In confucian philosophy, the Zodiacal Dragon used in traditional Chinese calendar, is associated with Earthly branch symbols - wood, fire, earth, gold, and water, with virtues related to fortune, career, health, and love.
xxxxx Masterfully carved in relief, the jade figurine depicts a ferocious beast crouching on four legs crossing an arched buckle, rendered with an elongated torso for the sash to pass, slightly arched back curves with a incised swirling scrolled motif, long winding tail, and a fierce face impacted by bulging eyes, arched eyebrows, a prominent nose, and wide gaping mouth wih fangs finely pierced. The piece is highly decorated with a pyramidal ruyi pattern about the edge. The reverse is fashioned rounded smooth to rest comfortable against the garment.
xxxxx The piece is intricately carved in the round from a single block of richly tone mottled pale celadon jade stone, accented by carmel to russet veins, with usual marks of ancient tooling and natural aged patina. Comes with a small wooden support stand as viewed below.

Data Observation: All natural vibrant Pale Celadon Jade of opaque quality, with mottled color variation, as well as some cohered mineral inclusions throughout. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
