Severus, described as “Libyan by race” by the Roman historian Cassius Dio is considered the first provincial emperor; born in the provinces into a family of non-Italian origin. He served as co-emperor with his younger brother, Geta. He traveled to Britain in 208 and strengthened Hadrian’s Wall. In 209 he invaded Caledonia (Scotland) with 50,000 men.
