Walter Henry Sweet 1889-1943  Antique Etching of Guildhall Dover England 1910-20

Exeter GuildHall on High Street Devon England

Exeter Guildhall on the High Street of Exeter, Devon, England has been the center of civic government for the city for at least 600 years. Much of the fabric of the building is medieval, though the elaborate frontage was added in the 1590s and the interior was extensively restored in the 19th century.

Walter Henry Sweet (1889 - 1943)

After the war he moved to Dundee and was employed by James Valentine and Sons as a commercial illustrator.  He married and had two sons one of whom studied at the Dundee College of art.
Sweet died in Dundee on the 12th February 1943 aged 53.

The Etching:

Signed twice by Walter H Sweet. See photo

Printers mark maybe CC JS in lower left corner at same level as signature on the right.  See photo.

Frame back has old Froe (tool used before good saws) cut shingles used as backing of frame.  Mat is stained and I hesitated to change it and destroy its antique value.

Frame itself old, needs paint, but again it is the original frame.
