Sodium percarbonate (Na2CO3*1.5H2O2), also known as sodium carbonate with hydrogen peroxide, is a  substance:

•      crystalline,
•           white or transparent,
•          of a powdery consistency,
•          perfectly soluble in water,
•          strongly hygroscopic,
•          intensely oxidising (can contribute to an increase in fire or to the ignition of flammable substances).

How is sodium percarbonate produced? It is obtained by the addition reaction of hydrogen peroxide to sodium carbonate. Sounds complicated? Meanwhile, the whole process is relatively simple. This is because addition (from the Latin additio: addition) means a chemical reaction in which molecules or atoms combine with each other to form a new molecule without any side effects.

Sodium percarbonate: application

The use of sodium percarbonate is a very broad topic. People have valued this substance for decades. Why? Because sodium percarbonate has excellent cleaning, bleaching and disinfecting properties. It can be used to clean and scrub various surfaces: floors, ceramic walls, countertops, bathroom and kitchen fittings. Household chemical manufacturers use this substance as an ingredient in:

1.           Homemade washing powder
2.           Eco-friendly dishwasher tablets
3.           Stain remover/ bleach
4.           Cleaning of kitchen surfaces
5.           Cleaning of toilets and fixtures
6.            Cleaning of domestic appliances e.g. washing machine, dishwasher
7.           Washing of carpets, curtains
8.           Removing mould from surfaces e.g. walls
9.           Cleaning of garden furniture, sheds, marquees, etc. Cleaning of garden furniture, sheds, tents, etc. (prevents mould growth on them)

With a solution of sodium percarbonate, mould can be removed from walls and limescale can be eliminated from kettles at home. A few tablespoons of sodium percarbonate and a few litres of warm water are also sufficient to make an efficient and effective preparation for removing stains from carpets, furniture upholstery and other surfaces (walls, carpets, etc.). Such a solution is also used to whiten curtains and various household textiles.

What precautions should be taken when using sodium percarbonate?

It is worth bearing in mind that sodium percarbonate is a strong oxidising agent. This substance in itself is not harmful to the environment, but if used incorrectly, it can cause various unpleasant ailments and poisoning. Special precautions must therefore be taken when preparing home percarbonate solutions. Above all, it is a matter of ensuring adequate protection for the eyes, respiratory tract and skin. Here is a short list of a few safety precautions that must not be forgotten when using sodium percarbonate:

1.  Homemade sodium percarbonate-based remedies can only be prepared with protective gloves.
2.  Protect the mucous membrane of the eye and wear protective glasses when dosing and mixing the powder with water.
3.  Do not consume the powder or solution (even a small amount of sodium percarbonate can cause severe food poisoning).
4. When pouring powder into hot water, it is unacceptable to inhale the resulting vapours (airborne particles cause severe irritation to the nasal mucosa and the entire respiratory system).
5.  Flammable substances must never be placed in the vicinity of sodium percarbonate (the powder must also not be kept close to hot surfaces: hot plates, cookers, etc.).
6. And the last, most important rule: containers with the solution should always be kept out of the reach of children. Do not place sachets or bottles with the finished product in low.

Sodium percarbonate solution: homemade recipes

A kilogram of sodium percarbonate lasts for many months, so it is a very economical yet easy-to-use cleaning product. How do you easily prepare a homemade cleaning or laundry powder? There are several different recipes, depending on what you want to clean or wash. If you want to quickly refresh the fabrics in the washing machine, pour or pour in about 2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate and set the programme to a low temperature, maximum 30-40 degrees Celsius.

In order to bleach the fabrics, it is sufficient to:

• pour 1-2 tablespoons of sodium percarbonate into 3-4 litres of warm water (remember to wear protective gloves!),
• mix the ingredients and soak clothes or textiles in the prepared solution for several quarters of an hour,
• after removing the fabrics from the solution, wash them in a washing machine (at this stage we can add another detergent and fragrance).
• We can also simply pour pure sodium percarbonate in powder form down the drain in the sink or toilet without having to make a mixture in the water solution.
• The sodium percarbonate then dissolves in the water and removes scale and microorganisms.
