G.I.  GURDJIEFF

& The Fourth Way

(box picture for illustration only - NOT SUPPLIED)

Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff  was an Armenian-Greek mystic, a teacher of sacred dances, and a spiritual teacher. He is most notable for introducing what some refer to as "The Work," connoting work on oneself according to Gurdjieff's principles and instructions, or as some others refer to it, the Fourth Way.

~~

Supporters regard him as a charismatic master, a powerful esoteric and human transformation teacher who brought new knowledge into Western culture; a psychology and cosmology that enable insights beyond those provided by established science.Gurdjieff influenced the life and writing of many of his pupils and the formation of many groups, all of which still function today and follow his ideas. His work and that of his followers such as Ouspensky, Orage and Collin attract an almost devotional following.

By their very nature, the Gurdjieff Work and Sufism - an Islamic mystical tradition seeking intimacy with the divine through contemplation - are related.

In his travels, Gurdjieff visited many monasteries, some of which were Sufi. He also spoke with many learned Sufi's. He had a great respect for the Sufis and it would seem likely that he may have been initiated into several of their orders. Although he was not a Sufi (the Fourth Way teaching predating all teachings and religions) it is not surprising that there are similarities to Sufism.

In the main, the two systems hold to the same outlook

  • That man occupies an important position in creation little guessed and less explored by western science.
  • That the cosmos is arranged in a structure of hierarchical realms of ascending refinement.
  • That few things are what they seem at any level.
  • That, to varying degrees, all of us are locked in a deep sleep continuously induced and reinforced by the dazzling and relentless evidence of our five senses.

Included are the following Sufi texts:

AL-GHAZZALI - The Alchemy of Happiness
