Italian Cypress, Cupressus sempervirens 12-18” Tree (bonsai) 

 

History / Habitat and Distribution: The Italian Cypress is native to the coastal areas of the central Mediterranean Sea and has since naturalized throughout much of the region. 

Description: The Italian (or Mediterranean) Cypress is a stately columnar coniferous evergreen tree that enjoys a full to partial sun location. 

Cultivation: This tree is very low maintenance and grows well in a variety of soil types. When kept in a small pot, optimum health is achieved through regular watering and fertilization. Easy to cultivate, the Italian Cypress is a popular choice for bonsai beginners. USDA hardiness zone - 7B and higher.  

Comments: Known for its durable scented wood used most famously for the doors of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, Rome, the Italian Cypress lends a touch of rich elegance. Grown outdoors or as a lovely bonsai specimen, it definitely makes a statement.
