VINTAGE 1948 HOBO PRESS THE BOWERY NEWS NEWSPAPER Jack London tabloid . Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
This street newspaper was a successor to The Hobo News, and started publication in late 1945. Harry Baronian, the editor, had a falling out with his previous employer (The Hobo News) and started his own version, Hobo Press: The Bowery News.” It was 12 pages long and was published in New York City. The article “LES (Lower East Side) History: A Look Back at the Bowery Blue Book,” states the following: “By 1948, Bowery News took over as the premier source for news and information about life from within the city’s underbelly, and Hobo News went under. The newspaper billed itself as “The Voice of Society’s Basement.” This publication, however, didn’t last long. The issue up for auction is undated, but ii's labeled “No. 51.” Since the newspaper was published monthly, it was probably printed in the late 40s, early 50s. There are some small tears on the spine and edges, and one in the picture on the lower left hand photo of the first page, but none affect the text. Along with Editor Harry Baronian, the rest of the staff included: · Charlie Bryant (Staff Artist) · Henry LaMothe (Art Editor) · C. L. Burlew (Staff Artist) · Jack Mintzer (Cartoon Editor) · William Rudolph “a.k.a. The Brake Beam Kid” (Road Reporter) · Bozo Clarke (Roving Reporter) This 12-page issue has several “pin-up” girls, plenty of cartoons, hobo-related poems, hobo-related articles, a random picture of boxer Jack Johnson, a list of racehorses to watch, and my personal favorite “Your Hoboscope.”
