My English father-in-law was a passionate antique dealer. Many strange & interesting things have passed through his hands, & he has created a fascinating legacy for our family. From his estate.....
This item is a vintage & full set of 32 cards, titled Warne's Observer's Picture Cards, VIII Ships. They were issued circa 1955-60.
My English husband remembers having several “Observers” books on birds, pond life, and other nature subjects.
The 32 card show many different vessels ..& how to identify them.... naval war ship, tankers, passenger liners, merchant ship, fishing vessels & more.
The wonderful paintings of the ships was done by the well known nautical artist, David Cobb.
With the 12 photo limit, I thought the fronts more important, & I could not take group shots of all the backs, but the backs shown give a good idea of the condition of the rest. I could not get a meaningful group shot showing all the cards either.. but all the 32 fronts are shown.
These are larger sized cards, measuring 2 1/2'' x 4 1/2'', & they are in excellent condition. They came attached on the left side edge to a wax paper dust jacket/wrapper inside the original box, but are now loose and still in the dust jacket, inside the box. Though the box is a bit rough, it has done its job & kept the cards safe & in wonderful condition..The fronts & backs are super clean & near perfect, the corners are mostly excellent with just 6 or so consecutive end cards having one ever so slightly blunted corner each. Please use the zoom to check the cards condition.
