*Why are these welded- The original GM tooling for the 68-74 brackets was destroyed a long time ago.   All current brackets (early and late) are cast from the 75-82 tooling.  The inner arm on the 68-74 brackets are approx. 1" longer longer, so all new production 75-82 brackets are modified with an extension piece that is machined and TIG welded in place to meet the correct 68-74 arm length.  These are approved and licensed by General Motors.
