Tourmaline is a mineral from the cyclosilicate family. With the chemical formula Al_6 Y_3 Na [(Si_6 O_{18}) (BO_3)_3 (OH, F)_4], with Y=Mg, (Fe, Mn) or (Li, Al), tourmaline crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system with a rhombohedral lattice in elongated rods or needles with a triangular section and curved faces. It does not present any cleavage and its break is conchoidal. Its name comes from “turmali” or “toromalli” in Sinhalese.
A tourmaline can be composed of several colors.
Tourmaline is a common mineral found in igneous and metamorphic rocks, as well as high-temperature hydrothermal veins. Mineral characteristic of pegmatites.
Tourmaline is, among other things, used in model making, particularly in arsenal model making, to blacken brass and give it the appearance of iron. It is also used in jewelry for colored varieties. Formerly used to clean pipes thanks to its piezoelectric effect. It also has pyroelectric properties, so when heated, its two ends accumulate opposite electrical charges, which can attract dust via static electricity.
Tourmaline is also used in mining exploration as a geological precursor to the formation of gold deposits. This mineral is also found in hair straighteners[ref. necessary]. Indeed, tourmaline has the property of producing negative ions when heated, negative ions eliminate static electricity.
