ON SALE IS A NEW TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL WIRING. THE PART HAS BEEN STORED IN BULK FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, DUE TO THIS, THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING/BOX MAYBE OPEN, MISSING, OR/AND DIRTY.

WIRING THE COMMANDER OR  COMMANDER XP

  • NOTE: BEFORE BEGINNING THE WIRING PROCESS, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY: THE COMMANDER MUST BE INSTALLED WITH 12 VOLT NEGATIVE GROUND SYSTEMS ONLY. REVERSE POLARITY OR IMPROPER WIRING WILL DESTROY THE BRAKE CONTROL.
  • THE COMMANDER WILL NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT SOLID CONNECTIONS ALL THREE WIRES. LOOSE CONNECTIONS MAY RESULT IN NO TRAILER BRAKING.
  • TEKONSHA RECOMMENDS THE USE OF INSULATED SOLDERLESS, CRIMP-ON BUTT CONNECTORS.
  • REVERSAL OF THE BLACK AND WHITE WIRE WILL DESTROY THE COMMANDER ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL.
  1. USING THE APPROPRIATE HARDWARE, CONNECT THE WHITE WIRE TOT HE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY.
  2. CONNECT THE BLACK WIRE THROUGH AN AUTOMATIC RESET CIRCUIT BREAKER TO THE POSITIVE (+) TERMINAL OF THE BATTERY OR STARTER SOLENOID. THE BLACK WIRE IS THE POWER SUPPLY LINE.
    • NOTE: AN AUTOMATIC RESET CIRCUIT BREAKER SHOULD BE USED TO PROTECT THE BLACK WIRE.
      • THE BLACK WIRE SHOULD NOT BE ATTACHED TO ANY OF THE TOW VEHICLE'S SUPPLY LINES OR FUSE PANELS. THIS MAY RESULT IN OVERLOAD OR DAMAGED TO THE TOW VEHICLE WIRING--RESULTING IN NO TRAILER BRAKING.
    • ROUTE ALL WIRES AS FAR FROM RADIO ANTENNA AS POSSIBLE TO REDUCE AM INTERFERENCE.
  3. PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE BLUE WIRE FROM THE HARNESS TO THE TRAILER BRAKE LINE, PERFORM A QUICK TEST TO VERIFY THAT THE BLACK WIRE AND WHITE WIRE HAVE BEEN PROPERLY INSTALLED.
    1. TURN THE GAIN CONTROL KNOB ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE COMMANDER TO MINIMUM (ROTATE COUNTER-CLOCK-WISE)
    2. PLUG THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR INTO THE COMMANDER
    3. TOUCH THE BLUE WIRE TO A SOLID GROUND. THE GREEN LED SHOULD COME ON. IF THE GREEN LED DOES NOT ILLUMINATE, CHECK FOR PROPER AND SOLID CONNECTIONS ON THE BLACK AND WHITE WIRES.
      • NOTE: THE BLUE WIRE IS SHORT CIRCUIT PROTECTED.
  4.  NOW CONNECT THE BLUE WIRE TO THE TRAILER BRAKE WIRE,

NOTE: USE PROPER GAUGE WIRING WHEN INSTALLING THE COMMANDER. HEAVIER GAUGE WIRE MAY BE USED THAN THAT WHICH IS RECOMMENDED IN FIGURE

**THE 9100 COMMANDER IS DESIGNED FOR 2-4 BRAKE SYSTEMS. THE RED LED CURRENT INDICATORS ARE SET TO DISPLAY ABOUT 12 AMPS WHEN ALL RED LED'S ARE LIT.

**THE 9020 COMMANDER XP IS DESIGNED FOR 2-8 BRAKE SYSTEMS. THE RED LED CURRENT INDICATORS ARE SET TO DISPLAY ABOUT 24 AMPS WHEN ALL RED LED'S ARE LIT.
