Built-in All Brass Back-flow Prevention

  • The Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker is built in so no additional backflow protection should be required, when installed in its correct position on the ceiling joist in the general area above the sump.
  • We've included a brass shutoff valve so the installer need not provide one.
  • The main control valve, or ejector valve as we call it, can withstand higher pressures (up to 150 Lbs. PSI) than our standard polypropylene one. Same reliable performance, more strength and durability.
  • Once installed according to directions, there should be no further question about it's safety or reliability. This makes it possible to meet the codes and also keep the costs down.

  • Cross-connection must not be subject to back pressure or continuous pressure. 
  • Install AVB at least 6" above the highest point of discharge. Protection is afforded against back siphon only. The configuration of the pump provides this 6" rise and the discharge must continue on a level or downward slope to the exterior so as to self-drain.

  • The discharge slopes down and away from Basepump and directly outdoors.
  • Do not connect the discharge from the Basepump -AVB into the discharge from the primary sump pump. It will cause the primary pump to send water back to the Basepump and spill from the Vacuum Breaker.
  • The Basepump ejector is mounted on the ceiling in the general area above the sump pit, discharging as directly as possible to the outdoors.
  • If it cannot be installed this way for any reason, it will not work properly and will not protect the potable water supply. The "S" shaped section from the AVB valve to the Tee may be removed if absolutely necessary for installation in tight spaces, but the 6" downward slope of the discharge MUST be maintained to the exterior, with no upward sections of any kind.
  • The suction pipe is open at the bottom, allowing the sump water to drop into the sump after each pumping cycle. The Basepump is typically mounted 6 to 10 feet above the sump water.
  • The discharge piping is vented to atmosphere and empties at least 6" below the AVB Valve of Basepump. There must be no back-pressure on the Basepump Ejector when it is not running.
  • The Basepump suction and discharge pipes are empty of sump water unless the pump is operating.
  • Specify the Basepump Model you want with the -AVB suffix. For example: RB750-AVB.

    Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB) is always placed downstream from all shut-off valves. Its air inlet valve closes when the water flows in the normal direction, but as water ceases to flow, the air inlet valve opens, thus interrupting the possible back siphon effect. If piping or a hose is attached to this assembly and run to a point of higher elevation, the back-pressure will keep the air inlet valve closed because of the pressure created by the elevation of water. Hence, it would not provide the intended protection. Therefore, this type of assembly must always be installed at least six (6) inches above all downstream piping and outlets. Additionally, this assembly may not have shut-off or obstructions downstream. A shut-off valve would keep the assembly under pressure and allow the air inlet valve (or float check) to seal against the air inlet port, thus causing the assembly to act as an elbow, not a back-flow preventer. The AVB may not be under continuous pressure for this same reason. An AVB must not be in continuous use for more than twelve (12) hours out of any twenty-four (24) hour period. (Note: Each time it starts, a new 12-hour cycle begins.) It may be used to protect against either a pollutant or contaminant, but may only be used to protect against a back siphon condition.
