Ruby is a type of corundum which crystallizes in the form of tabular and rhombohedral prismatic crystals. Color ranges from pink, crimson red and orange-red. Gemological Properties- Ruby is a variety of the mineral species Corundum; it belongs to the trigonal crystal system and offers a chemical composition of Al2O3.  Ruby is seen in transparent to opaque gemstones with a orangy red to purplish red color.  some stones do offer phenomena: asterism and chatoyancy or stars and cats eyes.  The refractive index is 1.762-1.777 and the specific gravity is 4.00.  The cause of color may be due to chromium, with possible modification of color by iron and titanium.  The hardness is a 9 on the moes scale of hardness, only a Diamond is harder, being a 10. The major sources are Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Afghanistan and India.
