In the same vain as the renowned Stratford, Connecticut artist Robert Treat,
we have a rare find in the archives of another past local artist by the name of James Tabor.
James Tabor was born and raised, just west of Bangor, in Corinna Maine. Nearing graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), he was enamored by an up and coming aviation icon by the name of Igor Sikorsky who was canvassing for employees to come work for his new firm. Igor offered him a job in his plant. He soon move to Connecticut around 1940 and worked, as what is known as, a technical illustrator in Sikorsky Aircraft Plant on Main Street. He quit Sikorsky for a brief spell to open an art studio in Portland Maine, then came back to work at Sikorsky until his retirement. He married Ruth Sykes Tabor in the 1960's and they had one daughter and lived on the north side of town. His wife Ruth, was also an artist and renowned photographer, still lives in Connecticut to this day. These are James Tabor’s late 1940’s personal artist's sketching of Stratford, Connecticut and surrounding areas. We have made high end lithographs of the originals which are offered in both a limited release of 1/150 and an open edition format. Most sketch works are location noted and dated but are unsigned due to his technical upbringing, whereby he only thought of his pieces as part of his job and never signed them. Yet we have acquired them through the estate of James Tabor and have been able to certify them as James Tabor originals by his wife Ruth Tabor who survived James to this day.
