The 2-seater German training glider Mü-13E was built by Egon Scheibe in 1950 the year before glider flying was permitted in Germany again after WW II. The prototype was built in Innsbruck, Austria.
Egon Scheibe had gained construction experience before the war with a range of gliders e.g. Mü-10 "Milan" and Mü-13d from Munich's Technical High School. These 2 types with wooden wings and fuselage of welded steel tubes were the basis for the Mü-13E Bergfalke.
In 1951 Scheibe Flugzeugbau was established in Dachau and series production of the Bergfalke in large numbers could begin. Between 1952 - 53 alone 170 Mü-13Es were built.
OY-REX was built in Dachau in 1952 with construction number 102. The aeroplane was registered in Germany as D-0002 (later D-0040) until 1970.
The mainpoints of the aeroplane's Danish history are as follows: 1970 registered with Gruppe 69 in Fakse as its first owner. - 1973 sold to Frank Schmidt Andersen, Daugaard.
In 1974 the Danish CAA sent out an airworthiness directive which dealt with inspection of the main spars of Mü-13E. This was due to the fact that the same type had crashed in Germany after a wing broke. - If the main spars were less than the specified measurements given, then the aeroplane was scrapable unless the wingspan was shortened by 2 meters. Close inspection revealed that OY-REX had small main spars and the wingspan was shortened to 15,66 meters.
In 1978 the aeroplane (together with OY-AXS) was given to Vejle Gliding Club. OY-AXS is of the Bergfalke II type, c/n "01", and was built in Dachau in 1954. - Scheibe had already by 1953 further developed the Mü-13 to the Bergfalke II with negative a sweep-back of the wings. A new alteration in 1955 became the Bergfalke II/55. There were about 300 Bergfalke IIs built.
OY-AXS was registered in Denmark in 1955 by Odense Gliding Club. It was later owned by the club in Rønne, Group 69 in Fakse and lastly by the club "Svalen" (Swallow) in Daugaard. - Both aeroplanes came to DV in 1980. ahs
