Bad by Michael Jackson.

Few albums arrive carrying the weight of expectation that this 1987 Epic release did, following as it had to the most commercially successful record in history. Michael Jackson stepped up as co-producer here, taking a firmer hand in shaping his own sound, and the sheer scale of the operation is written into the credits — a sprawling production team, MJJ and QJP staff, dedicated coordinators, and the kind of logistical machinery that only a project of this ambition could command. From Jeffrey Spear's instantly recognizable "Bad" lettering to the art direction of Nancy Donald and Tony Lane, every detail was engineered for maximum impact.

The record's sonic character owes everything to the engineering craft behind it. Bruce Swedien's recording and mixing give the album its famously punchy, dimensional sound, with additional engineering from Humberto Gatica and a deep bench of assistants capturing every layer. Seth Riggs served as vocal consultant, and that attention shows in the vocal performances throughout. Bernie Grundman's mastering ties it all together, delivering the clarity and dynamics that make this pressing so rewarding on a good system.

For collectors, this is a cornerstone of late-80s pop-rock production — a landmark whose technical polish and cultural reach remain unmatched. Owning an original Epic copy means holding a genuine piece of recording history, with artwork and sound that have defined an era.
